These two numbers are the most commonly confused terms in numerology, partly because different practitioners use slightly different names for them ("Destiny Number" is sometimes called the "Expression Number" depending on the tradition). Here's the distinction that actually matters, without the overlapping terminology getting in the way.

Life Path Number: calculated from when you were born

Your Life Path Number comes entirely from your date of birth — day, month, and year, reduced to a single digit. Because it's fixed at birth and never changes, most numerologists treat it as the broadest, most stable indicator in a reading — a general orientation rather than a detailed forecast.

Destiny Number: calculated from your full birth name

The Destiny Number, by contrast, is calculated from every letter in your full birth name, using a letter-to-number chart. Because it's based on your name rather than your birth date, it's the number most directly affected by a legal name change or a spelling correction — which is exactly why numerology-based name corrections target this number specifically, rather than the Life Path Number (which can't be changed regardless of what your name becomes).

A simple way to keep them separate

Why a reading looks at both together

A reading that only calculates one of these two numbers is giving you half the picture — they're meant to be read against each other, not separately.

In practice, the most useful readings compare the two: when your Life Path and Destiny numbers point in a similar direction, that's typically read as reinforcement — the person's natural tendencies and the identity carried by their name are aligned. When they point in noticeably different directions, that's often where a numerologist will spend more time, since it can indicate some tension between what comes naturally and how the name presents that person to the world.

A common follow-up question: which one matters more?

Neither is inherently "more important" — they answer different questions. If the concern is about long-term career direction or general temperament, the Life Path is usually the starting point. If the concern is specifically about how a name change, marriage name change, or business rename might affect things, the Destiny Number is what's actually being adjusted.
