Destiny Number vs Life Path Number: What's the Difference?

These two numbers are the most commonly confused terms in numerology, partly because different practitioners use slightly different names for them ("Destiny Number" is sometimes called the "Expression Number" depending on the tradition). Here's the distinction that actually matters, without the overlapping terminology getting in the way.

Life Path Number: calculated from when you were born

Your Life Path Number comes entirely from your date of birth — day, month, and year, reduced to a single digit. Because it's fixed at birth and never changes, most numerologists treat it as the broadest, most stable indicator in a reading — a general orientation rather than a detailed forecast.

Destiny Number: calculated from your full birth name

The Destiny Number, by contrast, is calculated from every letter in your full birth name, using a letter-to-number chart. Because it's based on your name rather than your birth date, it's the number most directly affected by a legal name change or a spelling correction — which is exactly why numerology-based name corrections target this number specifically, rather than the Life Path Number (which can't be changed regardless of what your name becomes).
